Important: GST-1 using USB Adapters - Read before ordering!
Return to the main GST-1 page.

Many customers have inquired as to the ability to use Serial to USB adapters with the GST-1.

The basic answer is YES, (WITH ONE IMPORTANT EXCEPTION DISCUSSED BELOW) , the GST-1 will work with Serial to USB adapters using most GPS map programs.

When using a USB adapter, the Earthmate connects directly to the GST-1 and the adapter connects between the GST-1 and the computer. If you are using the DeLorme Serial to USB adapter, the Earthmate will also receive its power from the USB port.

The IMPORTANT EXCEPTION:

The only known exception is Microsoft's family of mapping programs.

These include:
  • Microsoft MapPoint 2001
  • Microsoft MapPoint 2002
  • Microsoft Streets and Trips 2001
  • Microsoft Streets & Trips 2002
  • Microsoft Streets and Trips 2003
Microsoft has finally admitted that these programs are "not fully compatible with the virtual ports such as what USB creates." (See the Microsoft statement below)

Recommendations:
  1. All these programs work with the GST-1 using conventional serial port connections.
  2. Serial to USB adapters do work with these programs on some but not all computers Therefore we can not recommend, guarantee or advise that such will be the case with your computer.
  3. All other vendor's mapping packages, to the best of our knowledge, work properly.

Dear -----, (Customers name deleted for privacy)

Thank you for contacting Home Productivity Online Support. My name is
Stephen and I will be assisting you with this service request. For your
reference, the Case ID of this service request is SRxxxxxxxx (Case number deleted for privacy).

According to my understanding, you encountered a problem when attempting
use your GPS with Streets & Trips via a USB - Serial adapter cable
connected to the computer. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
feel free to correct me.

Thank you for contacting us. Based on my knowledge, this issue is most
likely due to the fact that the Street & Trips program is not fully
compatible with the virtual ports such as what USB creates. We may
encounter such problem when the GPS device uses a serial-to-universal
serial bus (USB) port adapter. The feature will be better supported
when we use GPS with Streets & Trips via a serial port connected to the
computer. For related information, please refer to the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
